Frequently Asked Questions

If you are thinking about getting a new water heater installed, if you are having problems with your water heater, or you just have some questions, check out the answers to some of most asked questions.

Even the best maintained water heaters have a life expectancy on them. Whether your unit is too old or if it is beyond repair a new water heater can save you money by reducing energy costs, newer water heaters will be more durable than older models, and they will need less maintenance because newer models will need less repairs.

It is best to set the water temp at between 120 degrees – 130 degrees. Also, make sure that you keep an area of at least 18″ all around the water heater so it can “breathe” and be easy to get to if it needs maintained. Never let children play around your water heater. Whether its a gas water heater or an electric water heater, they can be dangerous if not careful. At least once a year, it is good practice to flush the water heater to prevent sediment build up. You can do this on your own or call a licensed plumber to come out and do this for you.

There are a couple of important things to know before purchasing your water heater.

  • Make sure you know how many gallons your home takes.
  • Know whether you have gas or eletrci in order to power the water heater.
  • Check the energy efficiency of the water heater to make sure you are selecting an efficient model that will keep your costs down
  • Make sure you know your budget and keep the cost in mind.  The cheapest water heater may not last as long and be less efficiently made, however, the most expensive may not always be the best.

There are a few factors at play when talking about how long the hot water will last in your shower.  First, it depends on the size of your tank.  A 40 gallon tank will provide about 2 showers in an hour.  However, a tankless water heater will give you unlimited amounts of hot water.  Secondly, know if the temperature of your water heater is set between 120-130 degrees. This will be the best setting to give you the amount of hot water you need for a couple showers in an hour, but if you are using other appliances that take up the hot water, then you may run out of hot water faster than normal.
